I photographed hormonally-altered female body builders competing in the L.A. area. From one photograph of all the competitors lined up on stage, I excerpted two details: the breasts and the hands—two places where female gender is emphatically asserted (the bikini top and the fingernails). I liked the abstraction of the colored triangles, and the odd stillness and taughtness of the women’s hands. Photoshop had been invented by 1994, but I still made these prints straight from the negative.
