I conceived of myself as four different groupies for an all-girl band or posse or army called The Incarnations. Anne, Anna, Ann and Annie are the groupies but also, possibly, the members of the band. Each groupie has an elaborate key ring with multiple talismans hanging on it, the most prominent of which is a mass-produced flannel “tapestry” showing a nubile female warrior and her animal avatar. I was particularly taken by these tapestries and their version of the “phallic woman,” but also fascinated by the phenomenon of the personalized keychain, heavy with self-expression.
