In the context of a show whose theme was domesticity, taking place at the Muckenthaler Center for the Arts in Orange County, I chose to use the men’s room as my gallery. I hung a platinum blond wig on a pulley system from the ceiling in front of the sink/mirror console. A counterbalancing weight in the corner of the room gave the wig a little bit of resistance. A “visitor” to the restroom could pull down on the wig to put it on his or her head, and when she/he released it, the wig would float slowly back up to its resting height. This height was chosen so that eight-year olds, who were the most frequent visitors to the center, could reach it.
